Marriott is a massive company that’s been around for decades.
Baby Boomers used to be the people that frequented Marriott’s hotel lobbies the most. As corporate leaders, frequent travelers and the generation that accumulated the most wealth, it’s understandable they were Marriott’s sweet spot. However, there is about to be a new #1, and they’re much younger.
Millennials have now taken over as the largest population group and Marriott has taken notice, thus, substantial changes are in the works. A few examples of the upcoming changes are: food choices, an introduction of Chinese cuisine, Chinese language training, room sizes and layout, hotel ambience focusing on millennial needs and behaviors. Yes, there’s more too… but you’ll have to visit to find out. Sorry folks, The Marriott is not for the older generation any more.
Social Media and Innovation
I have to hand it to the 82-year-old chairman, Bill Marriott, he’s not the average elder statesman – he’s the exact opposite. What I find very interesting is that he’s social media savvy and realizes that he must be in order to keep his finger on the pulse of the next emergent market — Millennials. He also realizes that innovation, which is usually a word mentioned with young entrepreneurs, high-tech and start-up companies must be part of Marriott’s growth strategy… and it is.
If you’re traveling for business or pleasure and have stayed at the Marriott before, you may want to keep your eye on what they’re doing in the next few years, it’s downright cool. It all starts with their 82-year-old chairman, Bill Marriott. Thanks Bill for being an incredible leader and innovator. I may be several a few generations behind you, however, you are teaching us all how to adapt and evolve in the face of a challenging business climate.
